The set price of $143 is why most people book the set — a queen at $103 plus a box spring at $92 would be $195 separately. The minimum visit is $75, which a mattress always clears.
Tampa humidity is the reason your mattress is finished
A mattress in the Bay area does not wear out the way it does in a dry climate. It takes on moisture.
Foam and fiber in a room that sits at high relative humidity for most of the year absorb water out of the air. That is fine while the air conditioning is running and the house is cycling. It stops being fine when the mattress is moved to a garage, a lanai, a storage unit without climate control, or a seasonal condo that gets shut up from May to October with the thermostat set high and the doors closed.
Come back in the autumn and the mattress has spots on the underside and a smell you cannot get out. At that point you are not donating it, selling it or salvaging it. It is a $103 problem, not a project.
Why you cannot just put it at the curb
Check your own municipality's bulk-pickup page before you drag anything out. Tampa, Temple Terrace, unincorporated Hillsborough and the Pinellas cities all run separate programs with different set-out rules, different lead times and different limits on how many bulky pieces count as one collection.
Two Tampa-specific cautions on top of that. First, from June through November a mattress sitting at the curb is a wind and water hazard, and it will absorb a summer thunderstorm and become far heavier than it was. Second, a mattress left in a Seminole Heights or Ybor alley for a few days is an invitation — to rain, to pests, and to a neighbor's complaint.
If it is going, get it gone the same day it comes out of the bedroom.
The USF and University of Tampa move-out spike
Twice a year the mattress volume in this metro goes vertical. The University of South Florida semester end pushes a wave of cheap twin and full mattresses out of apartments around Fowler Avenue, Temple Terrace and New Tampa. The University of Tampa turnover does the same thing downtown and in the surrounding blocks, where there is nowhere to stage anything.
The pattern is always the same: five roommates, four mattresses, a lease that ends on a Friday, and a dumpster the complex has already posted signs about. A twin is $82 and a full is $94, so a four-bedroom student unit with two of each is $82 + $82 + $94 + $94 = $352 — and that is one visit, not four separate trips to a dumpster you are not supposed to use.
Bed bugs and what to say when you book
If the mattress has or may have bed bugs, tell us when you book. It changes how the piece is handled and wrapped, not the price.
What matters more is what you do before the truck arrives. Bag or wrap the mattress in place, in the room, before you move it through the house. Dragging an unwrapped infested mattress down a hallway and out a front door distributes the problem along the route. In a multi-family building in Westshore or on the beaches it distributes it into a shared corridor, which is how a one-unit problem becomes a building problem.
Encasement bags are cheap and available at any Bay area hardware store. Use one.
Getting it out of a Tampa house
The awkward part is rarely the weight. It is geometry.
A queen box spring is rigid and it does not bend. In the 1920s bungalows in Seminole Heights, Tampa Heights and Hyde Park, the staircases to a converted attic bedroom are narrow with a hard turn at the top, and a box spring that went up in 1998 before a wall was added frequently does not come down. Sometimes the answer is out a window; sometimes it is a split box spring; sometimes it is the back door off the kitchen.
In the new-build two-stories in Wesley Chapel, Riverview and Lutz the stairs are wide but the landing turn is tight and the ceiling fan at the bottom is in the way. In condo towers it is the service elevator or nothing.
All of those are $103 for a queen. We do not price the difficulty.
What else usually goes with it
Nobody replaces a mattress in isolation. The rest of the bedroom is normally right behind it.
Bed frame $68. Nightstand $57. Dresser $126, or $148 for a large double. Chest of drawers $126. Area rug, large, $68, or $33 for a small one. A daybed is $89, a crib $67, a standard bunk bed $123 and a solid-wood or loft bunk $148.
A full guest-bedroom clear-out of a mattress and box spring set, a bed frame, a nightstand and a dresser comes to $143 + $68 + $57 + $126 = $394. Compare that against a quarter truck at $241 and a three-eighths truck at $338 — for a bedroom with a bulky dresser, the truck fraction is often the better buy, and you can work that out yourself before booking.
Booking it
Pick the size, pick a window, and say whether the box spring is coming too. If it is a snowbird condo or a seasonal rental and you are not going to be there, tell us that when you book so access is arranged with the building or the property manager rather than discovered on the day.
Same price for a same-day slot as for one next week. Same price in the week after a storm as in February. Same price on the eleventh floor as in a Town 'n' Country garage.
